Five Peace Band

1 May 2009

It should surprise no one that to attend a performance of the Five Peace Band is to hear five musicians who each have a solid claim to be the best current practitioner of their respective instruments.  That is, you expect their technical brilliance, and that expection almost turns their mastery into something unfortunately mundane.  But hearing them two nights ago at the Strathmore, though, that acumen for me was overshadowed by the heightened sense of responsiveness each musician showed to the others.  Hearing the anticipation and instant reaction between the players is the most enjoyable aspect of jazz, and it was this aspect of the band’s performance that made the concert a thrilling display of musicianship.
